New U.S. Federal Weight Guidelines.
These guidelines use a measure called the "body mass index" (BMI) to determine who weighs too much. BMI takes into account height and weight to estimate total body fat. In the past decade, it has replaced the former Metropolitan Life Insurance Company's height and weight charts that once divided men and women into desirable weights based on small, medium and large body frames.

Under the newest federal guidelines recently made public, the definition of overweight has been expanded to include people with a BMI of 25 or more.

There are now 97 million adults who, by this chart (the area in the light blue background), are overweight (ie: BMI count of 25 or higher).

A Word to the Wise:
There is a genuine concern that these new guidelines open the door for widespread use of diet drugs and may unnecessarily stigmatize people who are not seriously overweight.

"There are certain groups within the population who can actually tolerate a much higher level of weight than other people," said Tim Gill, scientific secretary of the International Obesity Task Force, which worked with the World Health Organization in establishing weight guidelines. "You may get people defined as overweight using this criteria, who may be pefectly happy, healthy and muscular and have a muscular body shape that puts them at this level, but who are not actually carrying an excess amount of fat."
Among then would be people like Cal Ripken (BMI 28), Olaf Kolzig (BMI 28), Peter Bondra (BMI 26) and Brady Anderson (BMI 27), all pefectly healthy sports figures.

Until experts sort out the differences (some ethnic differences exist as well), what should happen in the meantime is that people with a BMI of 25 or more need to be assessed more closely by having such things as blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugar tested. As well they need to measure waist circumference. The guidelines advise that men with a waist of 40 inches or more, and women with a waist measurement greater than 35 inches are at substantially increased risk when they are overweight or obese.

Treatment should begin with the basics: diet and exercise to help trim pounds according to the guidelines. The panel also underscored that motivation needs to be gauged before any treatment starts by assessing past attempts at weight loss, current desire to lose pounds and the support available to help achieve it.
