BIODEGRADABLE - WHAT DOES IT MEAN

A substance which can be broken down by micro-organisms in soil, water or sewage treatment is called "biodegradable". This is the earth's natural cleaning process; without it, everyting ever manufactured would accumulate in our environment.

Given enough time, just about everything we pour down our drains is biodegradable. What's important is how long the process takes - anywhere from a few hours to hundreds of years. With twentieth century technology producing substances which are not readily biodegradable, nature can no longer keep up with cleaning out what has become and overload of waste products. The major problem with most other cleaners is common use today is that slow biodegradability leads to an accumulation of toxins ( poisons ) in our water and sewage treatment plants beyond their capabilities to deal with it. These are then available to be ingested by humans, animals and fish. The higher the concentrations of toxins, the more dangerous they are to our health.

WHAT WE DON'T PUT IN IS AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT WE DO

Following is a list of ingredients found in many detergents and cleaning products. Envirolife® Products are specially formulated to clean without these substances:
  1. ENZYMES are a common additive in detergents. While enzymes break down protein stains, they do not distinguish between protein in stains and protein in your skin. These are known to be extremely irritating to skin and may cause asthmatic reactions in some people.
  2. FLUORESCENT WHITENING AGENTS or FWA's a common ingredient in laundry detergents and fabric softeners, are chemical compounds designed to imbed themselves in the fibers of your clothes. They generally irritate the skin and also build up in clothing over time.
  3. EDTA and NTA , found in a range of household cleaning products, combine with heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury. These metals are then reintroduced into the water supply. Even low concentrations of heavy metals are known to be poisonous to humans. EDTA and NTA are very difficult to remove from drinking water and are particularly slow to biodegrade in cold water.
  4. PHOSPHATES are chemical additives which were recognized as an environmental hazard in the late 1970's, but are still commonly found in powdered detergents and cleaners. In fact, regular cleaners may contain 5% phosphates. Even at that permitted level they can cause environmental problems, by acting as fertilizer for algae, found in all natural water supplies. Too many phosphates cause algae to grow excessively and use up the oxygen in the water. This decreases the activity of the beneficial micro-organisms which break down detergents, and too many can even destroy entire lakes ( witness Lake Erie not many years ago ! ).

  • Fluorescent Whitening Agents ( FWA's )

  • Phosphates
  • Non Phenols

If you've experienced a reaction to enzymes, bleaches, FWA's, and certain preservatives, you'll find Envirolife® Products are like a breath of fresh air. No product can be totally hypo-allergenic because you can also experience reactions to natural ingredients. But with Envirolife® Products, you'll probably find that allergies ar either eliminated entirely or noticeably reduced.

Lifestyles does not subject animals to product testing. In addition, all suppliers of raw materials used in our cleaners are required to disclose the extent and methods of animal testing they use. Our policy is to minimize or eliminate the use of materials tested on animals.
